Celebrating 25 Years of Joseph Walsh Studio: Making In 2024

In 2024, Making In, the annual gathering of creative minds from around the globe, will take place from the 6th to the 8th of September, marking a significant milestone—the 25th anniversary of the Joseph Walsh Studio at the Fartha campus.

Since its inception in 2017, Making In has evolved into an international platform that champions the art of making across all creative disciplines. This event fosters a deep appreciation for the culture of making through unedited conversations, exhibitions, performances, and film. It brings together world-renowned creative voices to share their insights and showcase their work.

This year’s participants include several artisans working in rare crafts:

- Tristan Donaghy of Studio Donegal: A guardian of the traditional and rare craft of handweaving in South West Donegal, Tristan is dedicated to preserving this heritage skill for future generations.

- Greg Rowland MBE, Master Wheelwright: Specializing in the rare craft of making and restoring horse-drawn vehicles, Greg has been pivotal in halting the decline of wheelwrights by developing training methods and mentoring apprentices, ensuring the survival of this endangered craft.

- Laura Ellen Bacon: A British artist renowned for transforming raw, natural materials like willow into breathtaking sculptures, Laura’s work exemplifies the power and beauty of hands-on creativity.

At Making In 2024, these craftspeople, who work in rare and endangered crafts, will present their work on a prestigious platform, engaging with industry leaders and contributing to the global conversation on the importance of craftsmanship. As Making In celebrates its 25th year, it continues to be a beacon for those who cherish the value of craftsmanship and the unique connections that arise when creatives unite in dialogue. This year’s event promises to be an inspiring and thought-provoking celebration of the art of making.
