"Lose Control" by Mircea Anghel: A Fusion of Chaos and Craftsmanship

"Lose Control" by Mircea Anghel is a remarkable series of furniture pieces highlighting the rare craft of coppersmithing. For the first time, Anghel employs metal, using explosive energy to shape copper volumes in a way that embodies the uncontrollable aspects of life. These metal volumes, subjected to meticulously crafted detonations in the Portuguese countryside, are then hand-treated to achieve a unique aesthetic and tactile softness. The unpredictability of the explosions becomes an integral part of the artistic process, emphasizing the balance between control and chaos. The resulting furniture, which also incorporates hand-shaped wood, demonstrates a fusion of raw, naturally formed elements with the refined precision of traditional craftsmanship, capturing the essence of controlled unpredictability. The entire creative process was documented in a film by Frederico Velez.

Anghel: “We are not able to control anything but our attitude regarding life, and even that is at some point uncontrollable. Lose Control is a liberation of energy, a constructive loss of control”.

Mircea Anghel is represented by Objects with Narratives, a contemporary gallery for functional art and storytelling objects in Brussels, Belgium.
