Today, I want to share a story that deeply resonates with me—a story of commitment to preserving not just a craft, but a legacy. Monnickendam Diamonds, a company with roots stretching back to 1890, was founded in Amsterdam by Louis Monnickendam. This isn't just any diamond business; it's one with a rich history intertwined with significant milestones in the diamond industry. In 1914, the business moved to London, settling in Hatton Garden, a place synonymous with diamond trading. Over the years, Monnickendam has been involved in remarkable projects, like cutting and polishing diamonds for British royalty, including a pair of emerald-cut diamonds gifted to Princess Elizabeth by the Tanganyika Government.
What makes Monnickendam special to me, however, isn't just the diamonds. It's the heart behind the business. From the aftermath of World War I, when they hired injured veterans and integrated them into their workforce, to relocating during the London Blitz in World War II to protect their craftsmen, Monnickendam has always put people first. This wasn't just about business; it was about doing what was right, supporting those who had served their country, and ensuring the survival of a precious craft.
Today, the company is led by Arthur Monnickendam, a fifth-generation diamond polisher who I've had the pleasure of knowing personally. Arthur isn’t just a skilled craftsman; he's one of the kindest people I've ever met. His dedication to preserving the art of diamond polishing is truly inspiring. In a world where formal training for this craft is nearly extinct, Arthur has invested in a bespoke training program using the traditional master-apprentice approach. The apprentices were trained by a master with over 50 years of experience, ensuring that the knowledge passed down was both deep and rich. The apprentices have not only mastered their craft but also experienced significant personal growth. The impact on each apprentice’s development, both professionally and personally, extends far beyond merely ensuring the survival of this rare skill.
Monnickendam Diamonds' commitment and Arthur’s personal investment have rightfully received royal recognition for their commitment to skills development, particularly for helping preserve an endangered skill crucial to the UK's cultural heritage. Monnickendam Diamonds is a recipient of the 2024 Princess Royal Training Awards for outstanding training and skills development programmes that have resulted in exceptional benefits.
Monnickendam Diamonds isn’t just a business to me. It represents the best of what a company can be: a guardian of heritage, a beacon of ethical practice, and a community of decent, committed people. In a rapidly changing world, their dedication to craft and community is something truly special, and I'm proud to share their story.
