The ARCH (The Alliance for Rare Crafts Heritage) is more than just an organization—it's a collective of passionate individuals and organisations dedicated to preserving the rich tapestry of cultural heritage and craft skills that have been passed down through generations. The team at The ARCH comprises experts from diverse fields, including technical education, photography, art law, community development, and cultural diplomacy. Together, they support organisations dedicated to crafts heritage worldwide to drive impactful initiatives to ensure that traditional crafts and skills continue to be appreciated, practised, and sustained in our modern society.
A Diverse Team with a Unified Mission
Each member of The ARCH team brings a unique set of skills and a shared passion for cultural heritage. Co-founder Kerstin Rice is a dedicated advocate for crafts and cultural heritage, while Michael Osbaldeston, a Trustee Advisor, brings over 40 years of experience in technical education. Donata Wenders, also a Trustee Advisor, is an accomplished photographer with a background in film. Tim Reading, co-founder of VIY, focuses on vocational skills; Chris Jones, a British artist known for his intricate sculptures crafted from fragmented images; and Franziska Stalleicken, a lawyer with expertise in art law, all contribute to the organization's mission. The team includes artists, volunteers, and advisors committed to preserving and promoting cultural heritage. Next month, we will shine a spotlight on the volunteers and their outstanding work.
Advancing the Two-Year Strategic Plan
Guided by a clear mission, The ARCH is making significant strides in advancing its two-year strategic plan, which serves as the organization's North Star. This plan outlines several ambitious goals, each designed to enhance the visibility, support, and sustainability of rare crafts heritage.
Raising Public Awareness for Rare Crafts Heritage:
A core objective of The ARCH is to raise public awareness about the importance of rare crafts. In Q2 2024, the team launched the “YLCA” media campaign targeting 16 to 35-year-olds, aiming to ignite interest in the intangible cultural heritage of crafts. Exhibitions and immersive events will showcase the beauty and significance of these crafts, while partnerships with industry leaders will highlight best practices. Additionally, The ARCH is developing a unique range of products that will provide revenue for craftspeople and fund the organization’s ongoing efforts.
Ongoing Work: Networking and Driving Action:
The ARCH understands the importance of collaboration and communication. Since its foundation in Q1 2024, the organization has facilitated regular online meetings and plans to host in-person meetings in the future, fostering exchange and collaboration among members. Working groups are being established to focus on specific topics, with findings shared as valuable resources for the community. Additionally, The ARCH enhances its communication and visibility efforts through platforms like LinkedIn and its website, which will feature an online gallery, learning network, and resource-sharing forum.
Future Focus Areas
Looking ahead, The ARCH will concentrate on facilitating training opportunities, influencing policy-making, and promoting a shift towards more conscious purchasing decisions that support heritage crafts.
The ARCH is not only safeguarding the past but also shaping the future of cultural heritage for generations to come.
